Description: For years I’ve wanted to have an album in my catalog that has the feel and ease of a show played in my living room with a few friends I love to share tunes and songs with, surrounded by more friends who just want to hear us play and laugh, lights dimmed, and a few 50,000-gallon tanks of cider brewing behind me!
Well, here it is! The fine folks at Reverend Nat's Hard Cider here in Portland Oregon opened their doors to us on more than a few occasions (6 to be exact!) to give it a go. We got a few keepers early on, but the last night was the one. I was joined by some of my favorite musicians for this whole run, the ones represented on this album are Matt Flinner, Luke Price, Rob Burger, and Stephanie Schneiderman.
Matt Flinner - Matt and I go way back! We first met in 1987 when we both entered the National Banjo Championship in Winfield KS. He was 17 I was 19. I won't tell you who won ;) A few years later we (along with Sally Truitt and Ben Demerath) started a band called Sugarbeat (Matt on mandolin) that toured and recorded for a few years before we all parted ways. Matt is a brilliant musician with a keen ear and honestly one of the most generous players I've ever shared the stage with. I was so happy to reunite with my old friend who has gone on to play with his own Matt Flinner Trio as well as The Modern Mandolin Quartet.
Luke Price - First time I played with Luke we were both sitting in with my old boss Laurie Lewis. I was impressed with his fiddle playing and asked him to sit in on an upcoming show of mine...I started hiring him as much as possible from that point on! Luke is a two-time Grand National Fiddle Champion and a gregarious electric guitarist and singer. Watch for the band he has with his wife (Rachel) called Dean! Their music is exciting and gorgeous.
Rob Burger - I’ve known Rob for nearly 20 years, but only recently reconnected when we ran into each other while our kids were playing in the same playground...didn’t even recognize each other till we got talking about music:
Rob: So what do you play
Tony: Banjo and slide guitar
Rob: What's your name???
Tony: Tony Furtado
Rob: TONY! IM ROB...BURGER!
LAUGHS
Probably the most versatile and musical accordion players you'll ever hear! He's equally adept and spot-on with piano...well, really anything with keys! Just your typical easy-going, superhuman musician who is just as stunning in the studio or on stage. You may have heard him with his old band, Tin Hat Trio, or even with the likes of Iron and Wine, Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, Elvis Costello...Sting! It's nice to have this guy up the street from us here in Portland.
Stephanie Schneiderman - Her voice is sultry, soulful, and evocative. Her own songs are engaging and masterful. And when she's singing with me, she's finding and following all the nooks and crannies perfectly and making me feel like a far better singer than I am! She's got a bunch of critically acclaimed solo albums to her credit and always has some other amazing project brewing she's pushing her envelope with.
I first met Stephanie at a gig here in Portland a mutual friend was playing about 14 years ago. Another mutual friend introduced us that night and said we should write together. The next day I was listening to KINK FM here in Portland and was mesmerized by a cool song and an entrancing voice, then the announcer came on and that it was Stephanie Schneiderman. Well if that wasn't a message! I immediately went to her website and emailed her...now we are married and have an awesome son, Liam.
